How Premier League suspensions work
- 5 bookings by a club's 19th league match: a one-match ban.
- 10 bookings by its 32nd league match: a two-match ban.
- 15 bookings by the end of the season: a three-match ban.
- Sent off for two bookings: a one-match ban, and those two bookings don't count towards the totals.
- Straight red card: one match for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, three for serious foul play or violent conduct.
A ban for bookings is served in the Premier League; a red-card ban covers domestic cup ties too, so a player can serve part of it in a cup tie. This page is worked out from the cards in our match data by the FA's standard punishments. Appeals, extra charges and longer bans set by a commission change things: the FA's own guidance has the official rules.
