Xabi Alonso is already influencing the future direction of Real Madrid as he prepares for his first major test in charge at the FIFA Club World Cup. The Spanish giants are set to face Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia in their opening match on June 18. After a season without silverware, which led to Carlo Ancelotti’s departure, Alonso is aiming to bring early optimism with a strong showing in the United States.
New faces and tactical adjustments
Real Madrid’s board is fully behind their new manager and has started reinforcing the squad. Two arrivals from the Premier League — Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold — are expected to slot directly into the starting lineup. Huijsen will take over a central defensive role previously held by Nacho Fernandez, while Alexander-Arnold is in line to succeed Lucas Vazquez at right-back.
Additionally, left-back Fran Garcia is likely to be replaced. Spanish journalist Manu Carreño reports that Real Madrid are pushing to finalize a deal for Alvaro Carreras from Benfica, despite the Portuguese club’s resistance. Carreras is being lined up to become the first-choice in that position.
A transitional tournament in the U.S.
While the Club World Cup offers Alonso a stage to debut his leadership, Carreño notes that this tournament won’t necessarily reflect his long-term plans. The focus is already on the opening weekend of the 2025/26 La Liga season, for which Alonso reportedly has a preferred eleven that features four major changes from Ancelotti’s usual starters.
Real Madrid’s most frequently used team in the last campaign included Courtois in goal; a backline of Vazquez, Nacho, Rüdiger, and Fran Garcia; a midfield trio of Bellingham, Valverde, and Tchouameni; and a front three of Rodrygo, Mbappé, and Vinícius Jr. Alonso is poised to revamp both defense and midfield in the months ahead.
Rodrygo’s uncertain role and Mastantuono’s arrival
Rodrygo’s future has come under renewed scrutiny after a dip in form, despite him expressing a desire to remain at the club. With interest from Arsenal lingering, his performances in the Club World Cup could prove pivotal in shaping his role under the new regime.
Another addition to Alonso’s revamped squad will be Franco Mastantuono. The Argentine midfielder will officially join in mid-August when he turns 18, and could find himself immediately integrated into the midfield rotation. Alonso’s plans indicate a clear shift toward youth and energy as he embarks on this new chapter with Los Blancos.
