Michael Carrick takes a Manchester United side without a win in eight games to Stamford Bridge, knowing another defeat could cost him his job. Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea score goals for fun, but they have lost more league games since March than anyone in the Premier League.
Any Chelsea vs Man Utd preview this week starts with the visiting manager, because this lunchtime kick-off has rarely carried so much weight for him. Carrick survived nearly 40 hours of talks about his future after last weekend’s 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth, and the scenes at Old Trafford, covered in our report on Carrick’s future and the fan protests against the owners, showed how deep the unrest now runs.
United arrive in west London 16th in the table with seven points from eight games, one point above the relegation zone. They are eight matches without a win in all competitions, their worst run since 2015-16, and this is their worst start to a league season in more than 40 years. Defeat or a draw would make it nine, a run the club have not suffered since 1988-89.
Chelsea are hardly cruising either. Alonso’s side lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham last weekend, then went out of the Carabao Cup on penalties at Anfield on Wednesday, losing centre-back Maxence Lacroix to a hamstring injury along the way.

Carrick’s last stand at Stamford Bridge
Six months ago, Carrick was the man who had rescued United. Appointed on an interim basis in January after Ruben Amorim’s sacking, he steered the club to third place and back into the Champions League, earning a permanent contract in May. The contrast with this autumn could hardly be sharper.
United have won just twice in 12 games in all competitions this season, against newly promoted Ipswich Town and Azerbaijani side Sabah. The Bournemouth defeat was a third 3-0 loss to the Cherries at Old Trafford in four seasons, and it came four days after a 4-1 Champions League thrashing at Como.
The Bruno Fernandes row
The week’s biggest storyline has been the captain. After Como, Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the decision not to press man to man, and Carrick responded by leaving him on the bench for Bournemouth. United had 63% of the ball and 16 shots without him, but never looked like scoring.
The pair held clear-the-air talks at Carrington on Tuesday, and Carrick has since made clear that the armband is not in question.
“There’s no decision to be made on that.”
Michael Carrick, asked whether Bruno Fernandes will remain captain
Fernandes, the reigning PFA Player of the Year, is available and widely expected to return to the starting line-up. Carrick needs his creativity: United have scored just ten league goals, and Fernandes has three of them, one behind Bryan Mbeumo.
Chelsea vs Man Utd preview: team news
Both managers are dealing with long injury lists. For United, the left side of defence is the problem. With Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu both sidelined, Diogo Dalot is expected to deputise at left-back again. Kobbie Mainoo is back in training after missing four games, but is unlikely to start.
Chelsea’s biggest blow is Lacroix. The £52m summer signing from Crystal Palace had started every Premier League game this season, but tore his left hamstring while chasing Cody Gakpo at Anfield. Alonso confirmed on Friday that he will be out for a few weeks and will not return before the international break, while BBC Sport reports he could miss around ten games and not be back until the new year.
| Team | Out | Doubtful / returning |
|---|---|---|
| Chelsea | Maxence Lacroix (hamstring), Reece James (knee), João Pedro (thigh), Jamie Gittens (ankle), Jorrel Hato, Emiliano Martinez (jaw) | Cole Palmer back from suspension; Moises Caicedo available; Pep Chavarria back in contention |
| Man Utd | Benjamin Sesko (shin), Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu (hamstring), Manuel Ugarte (knee) | Bruno Fernandes available; Kobbie Mainoo back in training; Marcus Rashford managing a hip problem |
Without Lacroix, Alonso’s options at centre-back are Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill and Josh Acheampong, who has been filling in at right-back. Mike Penders continues in goal while Martinez recovers.
Alonso’s Chelsea: goals at one end, gaps at the other
Alonso has made Chelsea one of the division’s most dangerous attacking sides. Their 17 league goals are the third-most in the Premier League, behind only Brighton (23) and Manchester City (20), and they put five past Bournemouth earlier this month.
The problem is at the other end. Chelsea have conceded 15 league goals and kept only one clean sheet, and their record in big games is poor. They have lost 11 Premier League matches since the start of March, more than any other club, and 14 in all competitions, the most of any side in Europe’s top five leagues over that period.
Alonso tried to play down the cup exit, describing the Carabao Cup as the “least important competition” for his side. But after Spurs won at Stamford Bridge for only the second time in 42 visits, the pressure on him is building too.
Head-to-head: United have the recent edge
For all their troubles, United won both league meetings last season, and victory on Saturday would give them three wins in a row over Chelsea for the first time since 1965. The full form guide and stats are on our Chelsea v Man Utd match preview page.
| Date | Fixture | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 18 Apr 2026 | Chelsea v Man Utd | 0-1 |
| 20 Sep 2025 | Man Utd v Chelsea | 2-1 |
| 16 May 2025 | Chelsea v Man Utd | 1-0 |
| 3 Nov 2024 | Man Utd v Chelsea | 1-1 |
| 4 Apr 2024 | Chelsea v Man Utd | 4-3 |
| 6 Dec 2023 | Man Utd v Chelsea | 2-1 |
Matheus Cunha scored the only goal at Stamford Bridge in April. There is also a quirky record for Chelsea to overturn: they are the only Premier League side to play more than one home game on Halloween and lose every one, against Sheffield United in 1992-93 and Liverpool in 2015-16. For the longer view of both clubs, see our Chelsea records and stats and Manchester United records and stats hubs.
Where the game could be won
Chelsea’s defensive frailty is United’s best hope. Alonso’s side have lost three of their four London derbies this season, as our Premier League London derbies 2026-27 table shows, and a reshuffled centre-back pairing could be targeted by the pace of Mbeumo and Cunha in transition.
Carrick may revert to the hybrid back three, becoming a back four out of possession, that earned a draw at Leeds, allowing United to match Chelsea man for man. Alonso, in turn, is likely to push Cole Palmer into the pockets between United’s midfield and defence and test Dalot on the unfamiliar left. If Chelsea score early, a United side this low on confidence could struggle to respond.
What is at stake for Carrick
Carrick is expected to remain in charge for the Champions League visit of Roma on Tuesday and the home game against Aston Villa next Sunday, before the international break. But speculation about his successor has not gone away. Former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, who left St James’ Park in July, is the bookmakers’ favourite, with Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann also mentioned.
Alan Shearer is among those who have voiced sympathy for the head coach, while questioning whether Howe would get the control he wants at Old Trafford.
“I hope this isn’t the end for Michael Carrick at Man United.”
Alan Shearer, speaking to Betfair
The captaincy row has not helped, as we explored in why the Bruno Fernandes row is a distraction Man Utd cannot afford. A positive result would ease the pressure, at least until Tuesday. Another defeat would leave United looking nervously at the bottom three in the Premier League 2026-27 table, and Carrick’s position looking harder to defend than ever.
