A promising first half came to nothing as Manchester United fell apart after the break at Stamford Bridge. Lisandro Martinez was sent off, United are nine games without a win, and Michael Carrick’s position looks more fragile than ever.
Chelsea 2-0 Man Utd was decided in a damaging 14-minute spell early in the second half. Morgan Rogers walked through the middle of United’s defence to score five minutes after the restart, and Cole Palmer added a penalty after Martinez was sent off, as our Chelsea v Man Utd match page shows.
It was United’s third defeat in a row and leaves them without a win in nine games in all competitions, their longest run since October and November 1988. A fourth Premier League defeat of the season keeps them 16th, a point above the relegation zone, only days after Carrick was given the chance to turn things around.
Chelsea 2-0 Man Utd: the key facts
- Goals: Morgan Rogers (50), Cole Palmer (64, penalty)
- Red card: Lisandro Martinez, second yellow, after a VAR review
- Disallowed: Estevao goal ruled out for a marginal offside
- Man Utd form: nine games without a win, three defeats in a row
- Table: Man Utd 16th, a point above the relegation zone
- Next: Man Utd v Roma (Tue 3 Nov), Man Utd v Aston Villa (Sun 8 Nov)
How Chelsea won it
United were the better side for much of the first half. They pressed with purpose, made Chelsea’s makeshift back line work and went in level at the break with reason to believe the long winless run might be about to end.
That changed within five minutes of the restart. Rogers picked the ball up in midfield and was allowed to run straight through the heart of United’s defence without a challenge, before calmly dinking his finish over Senne Lammens. It was the kind of goal that has summed up United’s season: one lapse, no recovery.
Martinez sees red
Martinez had already been booked after a tussle with Rogers. Within two minutes of the hour mark he was in trouble again. As a Chelsea corner came in, the Argentine, not looking at the ball, thrust an arm into the face of Wesley Fofana. Referee Peter Bankes initially let play continue, but the video assistant referee sent him to the monitor and he awarded a penalty and showed Martinez a second yellow card.
Palmer sent Lammens the wrong way from the spot in the 64th minute, and with United down to ten men the contest was effectively over. Carrick did not look at Martinez as he walked off, keeping his eyes on his notebook as he talked through changes with assistant Steve Holland before sending on Mason Mount and Ayden Heaven.
“It’s unacceptable, absolutely unacceptable.”
Ally McCoist, commentating on the Martinez red card
It could have been worse. Estevao, handed his first league start of the season by Xabi Alonso, smashed in what he thought was a third goal, only for it to be ruled out for a marginal offside. Before full time, chants of “sacked in the morning” were aimed at the visiting dugout.

The numbers back up what the second half suggested. Chelsea created more than twice United’s expected goals and had nine shots on target, while United committed 20 fouls, more than double Chelsea’s total.
A badly needed win for Alonso
For Chelsea, the result was a timely response after a week in which they lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham and went out of the Carabao Cup on penalties at Liverpool. With Maxence Lacroix injured, Alonso’s reshuffled defence kept a clean sheet, only their second in the league this season.
It also ended two unwanted runs. Chelsea had lost both of their previous Premier League home games on Halloween, and United had won the last two league meetings between the clubs. Palmer, back from suspension, took his penalty with typical composure, and his full numbers are on our Cole Palmer stats page.
What it means for Carrick
Carrick was given more time after nearly 40 hours of talks with the club’s hierarchy following the Bournemouth defeat, as we reported in Carrick’s Man Utd future in doubt as fans turn on the owners. The expectation was that he would take charge against Chelsea, Roma and Aston Villa before the international break. Saturday did nothing to strengthen his case.
There were positives in the first 45 minutes, and the decisive moment was a needless act of indiscipline rather than a tactical failure. But the pattern is now hard to ignore. United have lost three in a row and conceded the opening goal in each.
The disciplinary picture is getting worse too. Martinez, who had already criticised the club’s board this month, will serve a one-match domestic suspension, ruling him out of the Villa game. It follows a week dominated by Bruno Fernandes’s public criticism of the coaching staff, which we covered in why the Bruno Fernandes row is a distraction Man Utd cannot afford. A head coach whose senior players keep making the headlines for the wrong reasons is a head coach under pressure.
Roma and Villa now decisive
United host Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday night, a game they badly need to win to stay inside the play-off places, as our Champions League 2026-27 results and fixtures show. Aston Villa then visit Old Trafford on Sunday.
Former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe remains the bookmakers’ favourite should the club make a change. If United fail to win either of the next two games, they would go into the international break with a run of 11 matches without a win and Carrick’s position would be very difficult to defend.
For now, United sit 16th in the Premier League 2026-27 table, closer to the bottom three than the top half. For the longer view of a club that has fallen a long way from its old standards, see our Manchester United records and stats.
