Turkey’s defender Merih Demiral is being investigated by UEFA following a controversial celebration during Turkey’s victory over Austria. The 26-year-old Al-Ahli player scored twice, securing Turkey’s spot in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals with a 2-1 win. However, his celebration after his second goal has sparked significant controversy.

Demiral made a ‘wolf salute,’ a gesture linked to the far-right extremist group Grey Wolves, associated with Turkey’s ruling coalition party, the National Movement Party. This gesture is banned in both Austria and France. Demiral admitted that the celebration was preplanned.

“I had a goal celebration in mind, which I did,” Demiral stated. “I am very proud because I am a Turk, therefore after the goal I felt it deeply and I wanted to do it, and I am very happy about doing it.”

Demiral posted a photo of his celebration on his X account with the caption: “How happy is the one who says I am a Turk!” This has led UEFA to launch an investigation under Article 31(4) for “alleged inappropriate behaviour.”

If found guilty, Demiral could face fines or a suspension, potentially affecting Turkey’s preparation for their quarter-final match against the Netherlands, scheduled for Saturday at 8 pm BST.

In a separate incident, England midfielder Jude Bellingham is also under investigation for a gesture made during the last-16 win against Slovakia. Bellingham was seen making a crotch-grabbing gesture towards the Slovakian bench after scoring an overhead kick in stoppage time. Uefa has opened an investigation into his actions as well.
