Wales captain Aaron Ramsey has confirmed he is stepping away from professional football at the age of 35, bringing an end to a lengthy career that spanned multiple countries and clubs. The midfielder revealed that the choice was difficult and came only after careful thought about his future in the game.
In a personal statement, Ramsey admitted the process of deciding to retire was not straightforward, emphasizing that it required significant reflection before reaching a conclusion. Ultimately, he chose to bring his playing days to a close after years competing at the highest level.
His announcement marks the conclusion of a career that included 634 appearances across club and international football, during which he scored 101 goals.
Journey from Cardiff to Europe and beyond
Ramsey began his rise through the academy system at Cardiff City, establishing himself early before earning a move to Arsenal. He went on to spend a decade in North London, which became the longest and most defining period of his club career.
After leaving Arsenal, the midfielder continued his career across Europe, representing Juventus in Italy, Rangers in Scotland, and Nice in France. He later returned to Cardiff City for an additional two seasons, revisiting the club where his journey first started.
Most recently, Ramsey had a short stint in Mexico with Pumas, adding another chapter to a career that saw him play in multiple leagues and environments.
Appreciation for fans, clubs and family
On the international stage, Ramsey earned 86 caps for Wales and paid tribute to supporters for standing by the team during both successful and challenging moments. He expressed deep gratitude for their loyalty throughout his time representing the national side.
He also acknowledged the clubs he played for, along with the managers and staff who supported him during his career, noting their role in helping him achieve his ambition of playing at the top level.
