Michael Carrick’s Man Utd Future in Doubt as Fans Turn on the Owners
A 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth has left Manchester United 16th and Michael Carrick fighting for his job. But the loudest protests at Old Trafford were aimed at the boardroom, not the dugout.
Michael Carrick’s future as Manchester United head coach is in serious doubt after the 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, a result that followed the 4-1 Champions League thrashing in Como only four days earlier.
United have now gone eight matches without a win in all competitions, which the BBC reports is the club’s worst run since 2015-16. The club’s hierarchy is understood to be in serious talks about whether Carrick, appointed permanently only in May, should be in charge for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea.
Yet the mood inside the stadium told a more complicated story. Supporters chanted Carrick’s name, booed the players off and spent much of the afternoon directing their anger at the Glazer family, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the executives running the club.
Man Utd crisis: the key facts

- League position: 16th, 7 points from 8 games (W1 D4 L3)

Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth in numbers
On paper, United had the better of the game. They had 63% of the ball and 16 shots to Bournemouth’s 10. The problem was what Bournemouth did with their chances, and what United did not do with theirs.
Rayan opened the scoring on 38 minutes from Justin Kluivert’s pass, and Marcus Tavernier doubled the lead five minutes later. Evanilson added the third on 71 minutes to finish the contest. By expected goals, Bournemouth created 2.15 to United’s 1.18, so the scoreline was a fair reflection of the gulf in quality when it mattered.

The defeat also extended a remarkable head-to-head pattern. United have now failed to beat Bournemouth in seven Premier League meetings, and this was the third time in four seasons that the Cherries have won 3-0 at Old Trafford, after identical scorelines in December 2023 and December 2024.
Bruno Fernandes started on the bench, a selection call that will be scrutinised given how little United offered in the final third. Andrey Santos, Ayden Heaven, Youri Tielemans and Harry Maguire were all booked.
Man Utd’s Premier League season so far
The opening-day defeat at newly promoted Hull City set the tone. United’s only league win came against Ipswich Town at the end of August, and they have collected just three points from a possible 18 since.

|---|---|---|---|
| 22 Aug | Hull City v Man Utd | 2-0 | L |
| 30 Aug | Man Utd v Ipswich Town | 5-2 | W |

What Carrick said after the Bournemouth defeat
Before the game, Carrick had promised a response to the Como result, insisting United would be “a different team on Sunday.” They were not, and afterwards he could not say whether he would still be in charge at Stamford Bridge.
“The responsibility is mine.”
Michael Carrick, speaking after the 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth
Carrick said he understood the position he was in and was not expecting a decision either way, adding that his affection for the club would guide whatever he did next. He made a lap of the pitch at full time, as he often does, though his acknowledgement of the supporters was more muted than usual.
Why the anger at Old Trafford goes beyond Carrick
Inside the first minute, songs against the Glazers and Ratcliffe were ringing around the ground. Once Carrick had disappeared down the tunnel, the boos for the players began and lasted until Diogo Dalot, the last man off, had left the pitch. The message was that a change of head coach on its own will not settle the grievances building in the stands.
The Glazer debt
The Glazer family have been the main target of supporter protests since their leveraged takeover in 2005. According to the club’s latest accounts, the debt now stands at more than £1.15bn. Football finance analyst Swiss Ramble calculates that interest has cost United £852m in total, with £37m paid in the last financial year, up from £34m the year before. Fans argue that money could have been spent on building a better squad.
Ratcliffe’s era: three head coaches in three seasons
Hopes were high when boyhood fan Ratcliffe agreed his minority stake on Christmas Eve 2023. Since then, the managerial decisions have drawn heavy criticism:
- Erik ten Hag was retained after the 2024 FA Cup final win over Manchester City, following talks with other candidates, and backed with more than £200m on players including Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte. He was sacked in October 2024. The Dutchman has since claimed the club broke a promise not to sell Scott McTominay to help fund Ugarte’s £50m move from PSG.
- Ruben Amorim was persuaded to leave Sporting mid-season, despite wanting to wait until the summer. He survived a 15th-place finish and an EFL Cup exit to League Two Grimsby, but was dismissed in January 2026 after clashing with director of football Jason Wilcox over playing style.
- Michael Carrick took over until the end of that season and earned a permanent deal after leading United back into the Champions League following a two-year absence.
A third dismissal in three seasons would raise fresh questions about the people making those appointments.
Wilcox, Berrada and recruitment
Wilcox, recruited from Southampton after the Ratcliffe deal and given more power when Dan Ashworth left, was the subject of hostile chants during the game and was booed as he left the stadium nearly two hours after full time. Many supporters blame him for the club’s recent signings. He watched the game alongside chief executive Omar Berrada, a former colleague at Manchester City, and fans also referenced City’s financial rules case in their songs, though Berrada played no part in those proceedings.
Tickets and the new stadium
Two off-field issues have deepened the divide. A ticket touting investigation launched in the summer was condemned by United’s major fan groups, who believe it is designed to price out regular match-goers in favour of corporate sales. The club insists that is not the case.
Plans for a new 100,000-capacity stadium, likely to cost more than £2bn, have also met resistance. United spent £63.5m on land for the project this year and say a supporter survey showed majority backing, but many fans dispute those figures and the Stretford End made its opposition clear on Sunday.
The ‘Standards’ banner
The most striking image of the afternoon came from the Stretford End, where supporters unfurled a ‘Standards’ banner featuring three of the club’s great captains: Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and Roy Keane. It was a pointed reminder to the executives of the levels United once set, and a contrast with a side now closer to the relegation zone than the top four. United’s full Premier League records and statistics show just how far the club has fallen from those standards.
Will Carrick be sacked? What happens next
The fixture list offers no respite. After the early kick-off at Chelsea, who sit fifth in the Premier League 2026-27 table, United host Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday 3 November and Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday 8 November.
In Europe, United are 21st in the league phase with three points from three games, inside the play-off places but only just. Their remaining Champions League fixtures and results include trips to Sporting and Villarreal and home games with Leipzig and Bayern Munich.
If the board does act, Carrick would become the latest in a long line of permanent managers to leave since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Our list of all-time Premier League managers charts how often the Old Trafford dugout has changed hands in that time.
| Manager | Left | How it ended |
|---|---|---|
| David Moyes | April 2014 | Sacked |
| Louis van Gaal | May 2016 | Sacked two days after winning the FA Cup |
| José Mourinho | December 2018 | Sacked |
| Ole Gunnar Solskjær | November 2021 | Sacked |
| Erik ten Hag | October 2024 | Sacked |
| Ruben Amorim | January 2026 | Sacked |
Changing the head coach is the quickest lever the club can pull. The scenes on Sunday suggest it may also be the one least likely to calm the unrest. Questions over ownership, covered in our guide to who owns every Premier League club, and over a summer recruitment drive that included the £48m signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea, will not go away with a new face in the dugout.
