Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou believes that Brennan Johnson can be a key asset for the team once he navigates his current struggles. The 23-year-old forward secured a last-minute goal in Spurs’ Carabao Cup triumph over Coventry City on Wednesday, but his muted celebration reflected a difficult time for the player.

Johnson recently faced backlash, reportedly leading him to deactivate his Instagram account following criticism of his performance during the North London Derby defeat to Arsenal. Despite these challenges, Postecoglou has expressed confidence in the young player’s abilities, emphasizing his hard work and potential.

“Brennan is really working on his game, and as an attacking player, he knows he’s constantly evaluated based on key moments,” said Postecoglou. “If he can keep his focus and push through this phase, he has what it takes to play a pivotal role for us.” The forward’s goal against Coventry, his sixth since joining Spurs, is a step towards regaining form. However, Postecoglou acknowledged that Johnson may currently be struggling with his confidence.

Having joined from Nottingham Forest for a fee exceeding £45 million last September, Johnson has yet to fully settle in North London. At his former club, the Wales international registered 29 goals and 12 assists in 108 matches, showcasing the talent that Tottenham saw in him.

Postecoglou also touched on the negative impact of social media, lamenting the abusive environment many athletes face. “It’s really unfortunate that this kind of behavior has become so normal,” the Tottenham boss stated, expressing his frustration over the online harassment of players.

For Johnson, getting through this period of criticism is crucial, as both his coach and fans believe he has the ability to make a strong impact at Spurs in the long term.
