In the Copa America quarter-finals, Brazil will take on Uruguay following a draw with Colombia in their final group-stage encounter. The five-time World Cup champions, Brazil, were aware that a win in California would secure the top spot in the group. They made a strong start, with Barcelona winger Raphinha delivering a spectacular free-kick to give Brazil an early lead.

However, Colombia, who have been unbeaten since February 2022, made a robust response. Just before the halftime break, Crystal Palace defender Daniel Munoz scored from close range to level the score.

Colombia tops group D

Colombia, who have claimed the Copa America title once in their history, came very close to securing a win late in the game. Striker Rafael Borre missed a crucial chance, firing over from the back post after being set up by Johan Mojica’s cross with six minutes remaining.

The draw ensured Colombia finished at the top of Group D, securing a more advantageous quarter-final matchup against Panama. Brazil, finishing as runners-up, are now set to face Uruguay, the 15-time Copa America champions.

Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr will be unavailable for Brazil’s quarter-final match due to receiving his second yellow card of the tournament.

Costa Rica edged out despite victory

In the other match of the group, Costa Rica triumphed over Paraguay with a 2-1 victory, courtesy of goals from Francisco Calvo and Josimar Alcocer. Despite this win, Costa Rica required favorable outcomes from other matches to advance. They ended up one point behind Brazil and thus did not progress to the next stage.

The quarter-finals of the tournament will commence on Friday, with defending champions Argentina set to face Ecuador at 02:00 BST.
