The Scottish Premiership is the top league in Scotland, and consists of a single division of 12 teams. The Scottish Premiership has existed since July 2013 as the top division of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL). Before then the top flight league was the Scottish Premier League (SPL) from 1998, and before then the top league was the Premier Division of the Scottish Football League). The Scottish Cup is the world’s second oldest national cup competition, first contested in 1873 and only being predated by the English FA Cup.
The Scotland national football team represents Scotland in international football and is controlled by the Scottish Football Association. Scotland are the joint oldest national football team in the world, alongside England’s national football team, whom they played in the world’s first international football match in 1872. The majority of Scotland’s home matches are held at the national stadium, Hampden Park, with friendlies sometimes hosted at club stadiums.
