England’s All-Time Football Records

England’s record win remains the 13-0 defeat of Ireland in Belfast in February 1882, while the heaviest competitive victory of the modern era was the 10-0 win away to San Marino in November 2021. The darkest afternoon in the record books came in Budapest in May 1954, when Hungary’s Magical Magyars won 7-1, a defeat that reshaped English football’s thinking for a generation.

Among individual records, goalkeeper Peter Shilton’s 125 caps between 1970 and 1990 remain the appearance benchmark, ahead of Wayne Rooney on 120. Harry Kane passed Rooney’s total of 53 goals in March 2023 and has since taken the scoring record beyond 80. England’s oldest rivalry also carries a record of its own: the fixture against Scotland has been played 116 times, with England winning 49, Scotland 41 and 26 drawn. Across more than 150 years, only Brazil, Italy and Uruguay hold a winning record against England.

England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

England went into the 2026 World Cup in North America among the favourites and have reached the quarter-finals, their eleventh appearance at that stage. Only Brazil and Germany, with 14 each, have reached more. The round of 16 win over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, secured with ten men after Jude Bellingham’s quickfire double and a Harry Kane penalty, was England’s first knockout victory at the famous stadium since the Hand of God defeat there in 1986.
