Villarreal 0-6 PSG: four goals in 17 minutes settle it at La Cerámica

PSG ended Villarreal's night almost before it began, scoring four times in the first 17 minutes on the way to a 6-0 win at the Estadio de la Cerámica on league phase matchday 4 of the Champions League.

Four goals before the quarter-hour mark had passed

João Neves opened the scoring in the ninth minute. Three minutes later Désiré Doué made it 2-0, set up by Maghnes Akliouche.

Senny Mayulu scored in the 13th minute, and in the 17th Fabián Ruiz made it 4-0, again with Akliouche providing the assist.

Ruiz added his second five minutes after the break, in the 50th minute, with Vitinha the creator. David Boly completed the scoring in the 78th minute, assisted by Neves.

Akliouche finished with two assists. Ruiz scored twice. Six goals came from five different players' efforts across the night, with Neves involved in two of them.

What the numbers say

PSG had 71% of the possession to Villarreal's 29% and took 22 shots to 14. The gap was widest in accuracy: PSG put 12 shots on target, Villarreal just two.

Villarreal did produce volume, with seven shots off target and five blocked, but little that tested PSG. PSG had eight corners to the hosts' four, and blocked seven shots of their own.

The discipline figures tell their own story. Villarreal committed 19 fouls to PSG's four and collected four yellow cards: Santi Comesaña (45th minute), Santiago Mouriño (50th), Sergi Cardona (66th) and Alberto Moleiro (78th). Quentin Ndjantou was PSG's only booking, in the 74th minute.

The season figures now make stark reading for the hosts. Villarreal average 2 goals per game but concede 3.5, have taken 0.75 points per game and are yet to keep a clean sheet. PSG average 5 goals per game, concede 1.25 and have 1 clean sheet, which came here. Villarreal's season yellow-card count stands at 11, against PSG's 2.

What it means in the table

PSG are first in the league-phase table after four wins from four, with 12 points and a goal difference of +15. Their previous results were a 6-1 win over Slovan Bratislava, 4-2 at Manchester City and 4-2 against Barcelona.

Villarreal are 29th with 3 points from four games, one win and a goal difference of -6. That leaves them outside the places for the knockout play-offs, which go to the teams in ninth to 24th. Their earlier results were a 3-2 defeat at Dortmund, a 3-1 win over Napoli and a 4-3 defeat at Liverpool, so they came into this game having conceded in every outing.

MFF's match model had PSG as favourites, giving them a 55% chance of winning, and predicted a 2-1 away win. It called the winner but was well short on the margin.
