Til goal gives PSV win at Porto and leaves hosts pointless

Guus Til's 57th-minute goal, set up by Sven Mijnans, gave PSV a 1-0 win at the Estádio do Dragão and left Porto 33rd with no points from three Champions League games.

Til goal gives PSV win at Porto and leaves hosts pointless

Guus Til scored the only goal as PSV beat Porto 1-0 at the Estádio do Dragão on Tuesday night, a result that lifts the Dutch side into the knockout play-off places and leaves the hosts without a point in the Champions League.

It was League phase matchday 3, and Porto, who started the night after defeats by Manchester City and at Betis, remain pointless.

The decisive moment

There was nothing to separate the sides until the 57th minute. Then Sven Mijnans supplied the assist and Til finished for PSV. Both midfielders were in the starting line-up.

PSV protected the lead for the rest of the game. Lutsharel Geertruida was booked in the 39th minute and Mauro Júnior in the 75th. Those were the only cards of the night, and neither Porto nor PSV added another goal.

What the numbers say

PSV had the bulk of the ball, with 60% possession to Porto's 40%, and had more shots, 18 to 14. Their accuracy was poorer, though. Porto put four of their efforts on target to PSV's three.

PSV had 11 shots off target and four blocked. Porto had nine off target and one blocked. PSV won the corner count 3-2 and committed more fouls, 9 to 7. Porto were caught offside five times, PSV three.

The win gave PSV their first clean sheet of the league phase. Across three matches they have conceded 0.67 goals per game and scored the same, and their 1.33 points per game reflects a record of one win, one draw and one defeat.

Porto's season figures make harder reading. They average 0.67 goals scored and two conceded per game, with no clean sheets and no points.

What it means in the table

PSV, who drew 1-1 with Shakhtar Donetsk and lost 1-0 at Leipzig in their previous two games, move up to 16th. They have four points from three games and a goal difference of zero. That puts them in the group of teams from ninth to 24th that would go into the knockout play-offs.

Liverpool top the table with nine points from three wins and a goal difference of +5. The top eight go through to the last 16 directly.

Porto are 33rd with no points and a goal difference of minus four. Slovan Bratislava, who are bottom in 36th with no points and a goal difference of minus 12, are three places below them. Porto are outside the play-off places and will need results soon to change that.

Porto's players have collected four yellow cards this season, against seven for PSV.
