Cunha double completes Man Utd comeback from 2-0 down to beat Roma

Man Utd came from 2-0 down to beat Roma 3-2 at Old Trafford on League phase matchday 4 of the Champions League. Matheus Cunha scored twice late on to decide it.

Cunha then picked up a second yellow card in the first minute of stoppage time and was sent off.

Roma's early lead, then the turnaround

Roma were two goals up inside 17 minutes. Matìas Soulé scored in the 11th minute, set up by Rodrigo Mora. Donyell Malen then converted a penalty in the 17th.

The first half brought bookings for Bruno Fernandes and Soulé (both 20 minutes), Emanuele Lulli (35) and Malen (42). United were still two behind at the break.

They got back into the game in the 58th minute, when Fernandes scored a penalty. Cunha then struck in the 83rd minute to level the score. He added the winner in the 86th, with Shea Lacey providing the assist.

Cunha was booked in the 87th minute and received a second yellow in the 91st. Ayden Heaven (70) and Harry Maguire (78) were also cautioned for United.

What the numbers say

United had far more of the attempts. They had 15 shots to Roma's seven, with six on target against four. Another four United efforts were blocked, compared with one for Roma. They also won three corners to Roma's one.

Possession was close, at 52% for United and 48% for Roma. Roma committed more fouls, 14 to 11, and were caught offside twice to United's once.

The shot count suggests United were due something after falling behind. Roma were efficient early, scoring twice from their first efforts, and United needed until the final ten minutes to take control of the scoreline.

The result follows a difficult run for United, who lost 2-0 at Atlético Madrid and 4-1 at Como before this match. Roma had lost 4-3 at home to Real Madrid in their previous Champions League game, after a 1-1 draw at Fenerbahçe.

What it means in the table

The league-phase table shows Man Utd 17th with six points from four games: two wins, goal difference level at zero. Roma are 19th with four points from four, one win and a goal difference of plus two.

Only the top eight go straight through to the last 16. Ninth to 24th enter the knockout play-offs, and both sides are currently in that group. PSG lead the way with nine points from three matches and a goal difference of plus nine.

MFF's match model had predicted a 2-1 home win, giving United a 44% chance, the draw 23% and Roma 33%. United did win, but the scoreline was wrong.
