Tottenham v Crystal Palace preview: two sides short of goals and form meet in north London

Tottenham host Crystal Palace at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 31 October (kick-off 17:30) in Premier League gameweek 9. Neither side has found much consistency so far.

Where the teams stand

Tottenham are 14th after eight games, with two wins and nine points. Their goal difference is -2. Palace are 17th with seven points from eight, also with two wins, but a goal difference of -10. That leaves them two points above 20th-placed Sunderland, who have five.

Spurs have taken 1.13 points per game this season, against 0.88 for Palace.

Tottenham's last five league matches brought two wins, two draws and a defeat. They won 2-0 at Chelsea and 3-1 against Coventry City, drew 1-1 at Manchester United and 0-0 with Everton, and lost 3-2 at home to Aston Villa.

Palace have won one of their last five, 3-1 against Nottingham Forest. They drew 0-0 at Leeds United and lost the other three, including a 5-0 defeat at Brighton and a 3-2 home loss to Ipswich Town.

What the numbers say

Goals have been scarce at Tottenham, who average 1.00 per game, against 1.13 for Palace. The gap at the back is wider. Spurs concede 1.25 per game and have three clean sheets. Palace concede 2.38 and have one clean sheet. Both teams have 12 yellow cards.

Expected goals (xG), the quality of chances created, via Fantasy Premier League, tells a similar story. Tottenham's figures are 1.03 for and 1.24 against per game. Palace's are 1.38 for and 1.98 against.

Among individuals, Tottenham's Solanke leads the way on 1.54 xG with one goal, and he is their first-choice penalty taker. Gallagher has 0.89 xG and Marmoush 0.74, each with one goal.

Palace's Mateta has 1.96 xG without a goal, in only 152 minutes, and takes their penalties. Strand Larsen has 1.41 xG and one goal, while Khalaili has 1.24 xG and one goal.

Team news and head-to-head

Tottenham have a possible absentee in Rodrigo Bentancur, who was shown a straight red card. By MFF's reading of the cards, he misses this game only if the ban is the three-match one for serious foul play or violent conduct.

FPL lists Tosin and Maddison as doubtful for Tottenham, each with a 75% chance of playing. For Palace, FPL lists Strand Larsen and Timber as doubtful, also at 75%.

The recent head-to-head is level at three wins each from the last six meetings, with no draws. Palace won the latest, 3-1 at this ground on 5 March 2026, and also won 2-0 in north London in May 2025. Tottenham won 1-0 at Selhurst Park on 28 December 2025.

MFF prediction

MFF's match model prediction is a 1-0 win for Tottenham. It gives Spurs a 53% chance of victory, with a 24% chance of a draw and 23% for a Palace win.
