Tottenham v Coventry City preview: bottom-placed Spurs need a first win

Tottenham host Coventry City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday 19 October 2026 (kick-off 20:00) in gameweek 7 of the Premier League. It is a meeting between two sides who have both struggled at the start of the season.

Where the teams stand

Spurs are 20th with three points from six games and a goal difference of -6. Coventry City are 15th with six points from six, two wins and the same goal difference. Man City lead the table with 21 points from seven games.

Tottenham's last five brought two defeats and three draws: 0-2 against Newcastle, 0-0 at Nottingham Forest, 0-0 against Everton, 2-3 against Aston Villa and 1-1 at Man Utd.

Coventry have lost three of their last five and won the other two. They lost 0-1 to Hull City, 0-1 at Man City and 0-5 against Brighton, but beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 away and Newcastle 4-1.

The numbers that matter

Neither side scores much. Tottenham average 0.5 goals a game and concede 1.5. Coventry average 0.83 and concede 1.83. Spurs have 0.5 points per game to Coventry's 1, and have two clean sheets to Coventry's one. Tottenham have collected eight yellow cards, Coventry five.

Expected goals data via Fantasy Premier League, which measures the quality of chances created and conceded, suggests Tottenham have been unlucky in front of goal. They average 1.11 xG for and 1.44 against per game. Coventry's figures are 1.07 for and 1.74 against.

Tottenham's leading figure on that measure is Solanke, with 1.23 xG and one goal in 260 minutes. FPL lists him as the first-choice penalty taker. Coventry's Rudoni has 1.71 xG, one goal and 1.15 expected assists, without an assist, in 379 minutes. He is also Coventry's first-choice penalty taker, according to FPL. Awoniyi has 1.3 xG and no goals.

Absentees

Rodrigo Bentancur is due to serve a ban for this match after a straight red card, as worked out by MFF from the cards. Coventry's Taiwo Awoniyi was also sent off. By the same count, he misses this game only if his red card carries the three-match ban for serious foul play or violent conduct.

FPL lists Tottenham's Pedro Porro (hamstring), Xavi (knee), Odobert (knee), Kulusevski (knee) and Mudryk (ankle) as injured, each with a 0% chance of playing. It also lists Richarlison as unavailable and not included in the squad.

For Coventry, FPL has Kesler-Hayden as doubtful with a hamstring problem, 75% chance of playing. Woolfenden (knee), Amenda (calf), Wright (thigh) and Eccles (ankle) are listed as injured, each at 0%.

Head to head and prediction

There are no recent meetings between the sides in MFF's data, so there is no recent head-to-head to go on.

MFF's match model predicts a 1-0 win for Tottenham. It gives Spurs a 41% chance of victory, with a 28% chance of a draw and a 32% chance of a Coventry City win.
