Newcastle United have completed the signing of midfielder Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa in a deal worth £40 million.The 24-year-old has agreed to a five-year contract at St James’ Park and becomes the Magpies’ fourth new arrival of the summer window, further strengthening Eddie Howe’s squad ahead of the new campaign.

Ramsey described the move as a significant moment in his career but said the decision was straightforward once Newcastle showed firm interest.“This is a big move for me, but as soon as I knew the gaffer was interested and really liked me, it didn’t take much time to decide,” he told the club’s official website.
Reflecting on past encounters against Newcastle, the midfielder pointed to the team’s intensity and the atmosphere at St James’ Park as major factors in his choice.“It was always a tough game playing for Villa against Newcastle – the team is full of energy, so athletic and the fans are so passionate. I feel my game will suit that and I’m excited to be on the other end of it now,” he added.
Having joined Aston Villa as a six-year-old, Ramsey rose through the ranks to make 167 first-team appearances. He also represented England at Under-21 level, marking himself as one of Villa’s most established academy graduates.
Howe praises versatility and attacking drive
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe expressed his satisfaction with the deal, highlighting Ramsey’s qualities on and off the pitch.“Jacob is another fantastic addition to our squad,” Howe said. “His qualities will bring us something different on the pitch and he fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football under his belt.”
Howe emphasised the midfielder’s attacking instincts and adaptability as key reasons behind the signing.“Jacob offers versatility and his directness in attack has proven to be a real threat at this level in recent seasons. He performed very well in the Champions League last season too and we believe he’ll be a major asset for us,” he added.
Looking ahead to his debut
Ramsey will continue wearing the number 41 shirt that he had at Villa Park, ensuring continuity as he begins the next stage of his career.He could make his first appearance for Newcastle on Monday, 25 August, when Liverpool travel to St James’ Park for an early-season clash under the lights.
