Barcelona are pushing to finalise the arrival of Nico Williams from Athletic Club ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. There is strong belief within the club that the deal will go through, and should it happen, it will influence several tactical decisions for head coach Hansi Flick.
Flick is said to view Williams as a key reinforcement for the left flank and intends to make him the primary option in that role. The potential addition of the Spain international is part of a broader reshuffling in Barcelona’s front line, one that could redefine several players’ responsibilities moving forward.
System shake-up: new roles for Raphinha and Yamal
If Williams joins, Raphinha is expected to shift into a more central attacking role, a move designed to keep the Brazilian’s skill set in the starting lineup while making space on the wing. Lamine Yamal would continue to occupy his spot on the right-hand side, with no expected change to his status in the team.
In the centre of attack, Dani Olmo is tipped to function as a false nine under Flick’s system. This adjustment would have direct consequences for Robert Lewandowski, who may find himself featuring less frequently as a starter next season.
Reduced minutes for Lewandowski and Fermin Lopez
Although Lewandowski netted 42 goals in 52 games last season, questions remain about his all-round contribution, particularly as he approaches his 37th birthday this August. Barcelona are reportedly planning for a future without him beyond the expiry of his current deal in 2026. By limiting his minutes next season, the club also hopes to manage his physical demands, even though he has largely avoided major fitness concerns in recent years.
Another player set for reduced involvement is Fermin Lopez. The 22-year-old, who has drawn transfer interest, is expected to fall behind both Olmo and Raphinha in central areas and behind Williams and Raphinha on the left. Despite potentially featuring less, Flick is understood to appreciate both Lopez and Lewandowski’s contributions and wants to keep them in his squad.
