The Ezri Konsa Arsenal transfer is complete, with the England defender joining the Premier League champions from Aston Villa in a deal worth up to £55m. It hands Mikel Arteta the defensive reinforcement he had been chasing for much of the summer 2026 transfer window.
The 28-year-old England international has signed a four-year contract at the Emirates Stadium, with the club holding an option to extend it by a further 12 months. Arsenal will pay Villa a fixed fee of £51m, with a further £4m payable in add-ons if performance triggers are met.
Konsa becomes Arsenal's fifth signing of the summer and arrives at a point of genuine need. With William Saliba and Jurrien Timber both sidelined, the champions began their title defence with a first-choice back four that existed only on paper.

Why Arsenal signed Ezri Konsa
Arsenal conceded fewer goals than anyone else on their way to the 2025-26 title, and the Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes partnership was the foundation of it. Half of that back four is unavailable for the opening stretch of the new campaign.
Saliba has been ruled out for an extended period with the back problem he managed through last season and which cut short his World Cup with France. Timber, the first-choice right-back, is also missing with the groin injury that forced him out of the Netherlands squad.
That left Ben White as the only senior right-back available and 21-year-old Cristhian Mosquera as the only right-sided centre-back capable of partnering Gabriel. Arteta has consistently avoided pairing two left-footed defenders in the middle, and both Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie are left-sided, so an injury to White would have forced an awkward reshuffle.
Konsa solves that in one move. He is comfortable at right-back and as the right-sided half of a centre-back pairing, which is precisely the shape of the gap.
Arsenal's summer 2026 business

|---|---|---|
| Piero Hincapie | Bayer Leverkusen | £34,500,000 |
| Illan Meslier | Leeds United | Free |

| Total | £198,500,000 |
Fees are quoted inclusive of potential add-ons. Against that outlay, Arsenal have recouped roughly £43.8m through the sales of Jakub Kiwior, Leandro Trossard, Christian Norgaard and Karl Hein.
Konsa's Aston Villa record
Konsa joined Villa from Brentford in July 2019 for around £12m and leaves seven years later as one of the most durable players of the club's Premier League era. He made 286 appearances in all competitions, 231 of them in the league.
That total places him ninth on Villa's all-time Premier League appearance list, one behind Olof Mellberg and two ahead of Ugo Ehiogu.

His final season at Villa Park brought two goals and an assist in 48 appearances as Unai Emery's side finished fourth and returned to the Champions League. He also started every match of Villa's Europa League run, which ended in May with the club's first European trophy since 1982.
Konsa then played every England game as Thomas Tuchel's side reached the World Cup semi-finals, losing 2-1 to Argentina before beating France in the third-place match.
What Konsa's exit means for Aston Villa
Villa initially valued Konsa at £60m and rejected an opening Arsenal bid of £30m before the clubs settled in between. The sale continues a summer of heavy turnover at Villa Park, with Morgan Rogers sold to Chelsea for £117m, Youri Tielemans joining Manchester United for £35m and Lucas Digne returning to Paris St-Germain.
Emery has reinvested at pace, adding Johan Manzambi for £59.5m, Joao Gomes for £38m, Matteo Ruggeri for £17m and goalkeeper Zion Suzuki for £30m. Replacing Konsa specifically remains the outstanding job, with the club still expected to move for a centre-back before the window shuts.
What Konsa and Arsenal said
Konsa said it was a proud moment for me and my family
to join the club, adding that he had spoken to Arsenal's England contingent about the move while on international duty at the World Cup. Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka were all in the squad with him.
Sporting director Andrea Berta described Konsa as a high-quality defender whose athleticism, composure and tactical intelligence had made him
Andrea Berta, Arsenal sporting directorone of the Premier League's most consistent performers, and pointed to his ability to cover both centre-back and right-back as valuable squad versatility.
On what he offers Arteta, Konsa was blunt: defending. He noted that the manager values defenders who can defend and who stay calm in possession, and said the style suits him.
When will Konsa make his Arsenal debut?
Konsa missed the registration deadline for Arsenal's opening fixture against newly promoted Coventry City. That makes the trip to Villa Park on Monday 31 August the likely date of his first Premier League appearance for the club, against the team he served for seven seasons.
It is a fixture Arsenal have generally enjoyed. Across 62 Premier League meetings the Gunners have won 33, drawn 15 and lost 14, scoring 107 goals. The full breakdown sits in our Arsenal all-time Premier League record, while Konsa's place in Villa's appearance history is tracked on our Aston Villa Premier League appearances page.
Having been given four weeks off by Emery after the World Cup, Konsa played no part in Villa's pre-season, including the 2-1 Uefa Super Cup defeat by Paris St-Germain. Arteta will need to manage his return to match sharpness carefully.
