The competition began in 1972 as the brainchild of Dutch journalist Anton Witkamp, who wanted a definitive test of the best side in Europe during Ajax’s period of dominance. That first meeting, in which Ajax beat Rangers 3-1 and 3-2 across two legs, is not officially recognised by UEFA, whose records begin with the following edition.
From the start until 1999 the Super Cup pitted the European Cup or Champions League holders against the winners of the European Cup Winners’ Cup. When that competition was abolished, its place passed to the UEFA Cup, rebranded as the Europa League in 2009. Three years have no entry at all: 1973, 1981 and 1985.
