Sylvain Distin is the French player with the most Premier League appearances, having played 469 times for five clubs between 2001 and 2016. Nicolas Anelka is second on 364 and Hugo Lloris third on 361, and the gap between Distin and the rest is so large that no other Frenchman has come within 100 games of him.

Sylvain Distin: the record no Frenchman has come close to
Distin’s 469 games are remarkable for how quietly they were built. He arrived at Newcastle United on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in 2001, then spent five seasons at Manchester City, two at Portsmouth (where he won the 2008 FA Cup) and six at Everton before a final campaign with Bournemouth in 2015-16. He played 178 Premier League games for City and 174 for Everton, and only seven of his 469 appearances ended with him on the scoresheet.
He never won a cap for France, and his total stands as the most Premier League appearances by any player without a senior international appearance. It also places him 20th on the competition’s all-time list, ahead of the likes of Peter Crouch and Alan Shearer.
The seven Frenchmen with 300 Premier League games
Behind Distin, six more French players passed 300 games, and they arrived at that mark by very different routes. Nicolas Anelka (364) moved more than anyone, playing for six clubs and scoring 125 goals, the second most by a Frenchman. Hugo Lloris (361) did the opposite: every one of his games came for Tottenham, and he started all 361 of them.
Steed Malbranque (336) is the name most fans forget, but his decade at Fulham, Tottenham and Sunderland is enough for fourth place on this list. Gaël Clichy (325) won the title with Arsenal’s Invincibles as a teenager and twice more with Manchester City, while William Gallas (321) is one of the few players to represent Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham in the competition. Patrick Vieira (307) completes the group, with 279 of his games coming for Arsenal before a final spell at City.
Where the great Arsenal Frenchmen rank
Arsenal provide more players to this list than any other club. Eleven of the top 25 played Premier League football for the Gunners: Anelka, Clichy, Gallas, Vieira, Silvestre, Sagna, Henry, Giroud, Koscielny, Nasri and Pirès all appear, and most of them were signed by Arsène Wenger. Thierry Henry sits 14th on 258 appearances, a modest figure set against his 175 goals, which remain the most by a French player. The full Gunners list is on our Arsenal Premier League appearances page.
Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud share 15th place on 255. Koscielny made every one of his for Arsenal, while Giroud split his between Arsenal (180) and Chelsea (75).
Manchester United’s French contingent
Patrice Evra (278) and Mikaël Silvestre (275) sit next to each other in 11th and 12th, with 273 and 249 of their games respectively coming for Manchester United. Louis Saha (289) played 86 times for United in the middle of a six-club career, and Anthony Martial is the only United one-club man in the top 25, finishing on 209 with 63 goals. The club’s complete list is on our Manchester United Premier League appearances page.
The most recent Frenchmen to join the list
Lucas Digne is the latest name to move into the top 25. The left-back finished on 253 Premier League appearances, 113 for Everton and 140 for Aston Villa, before rejoining Paris Saint-Germain in August 2026. Kurt Zouma (247) left West Ham in 2025, and N’Golo Kanté’s 227 games, split between Leicester City and Chelsea, included two Premier League titles with two different clubs.
That leaves no current Premier League player inside the top 25, and no one close. William Saliba had reached 131 Premier League appearances for Arsenal by the end of 2025-26, 66 short of the 197 needed to enter the list at that point. For the scoring side of the story, Henry, Anelka, Giroud, Saha, Martial and Pirès all feature among the all-time top 100 Premier League goalscorers.
