Sunderland outshot Leeds 15 to 11 at the Stadium of Light but could not find a way through, and the Premier League's 20th-placed side remain stuck on five points.

Sunderland 0-0 Leeds United: hosts have the shots but still no win

Sunderland and Leeds United shared a goalless draw at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, a result that does little to change the picture for either club in the Premier League.

There were no goals, so there were no decisive moments of the usual kind. The only incidents the match events record are three yellow cards: Ethan Ampadu for Leeds in the 29th minute, Reinildo Mandava for Sunderland in the 39th and Jayden Bogle for Leeds in the 67th.

What the numbers say

Sunderland had the better of the shot count. They had 15 attempts to Leeds' 11, though only four of them were on target, the same number as the visitors. Another four went off target and seven were blocked. Leeds had four off target and three blocked.

Possession was almost even, with Sunderland on 51% and Leeds on 49%. Leeds won five corners to Sunderland's four, and committed 14 fouls to the home side's nine.

Expected goals data via Fantasy Premier League, which measures the quality of chances created, puts Sunderland on 0.45 for the match and Leeds on 0.07. That suggests the hosts' volume of shots was not matched by clear openings, but that Leeds created next to nothing of their own.

Brian Brobbey and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, both on three league goals this season, started up front for their sides. Neither could add to that tally.

What it means for the table

Sunderland stay 20th with five points from eight games and a goal difference of minus eight. They have won once all season and are now winless in six. They average 0.75 goals per game, and the home side's attacking numbers this afternoon fit that struggle to turn pressure into goals.

Leeds are seventh on 11 points from eight, with two wins and a goal difference of plus three. They arrived on the back of a 4-1 win over Newcastle and a 1-1 draw at Brighton, and have lost only once in their last six league games. They concede 0.75 goals per game, and this was another clean sheet, their third of the campaign.

The draw was the fourth in the last seven meetings between the clubs. Before this game the recent record read two wins for Sunderland, three draws and one for Leeds, with Sunderland winning the most recent fixture 1-0 at Elland Road in March.

The model's verdict

MFF's match model predicted a 1-0 win for Leeds, giving them a 45% chance, with 28% for a Sunderland win and 27% for a draw. On this occasion it was wrong.
