Real Madrid 4-1 Leipzig: three late goals settle it at the Bernabéu

Real Madrid beat Leipzig 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday night, scoring three times in the final 11 minutes to make it three wins from three in the Champions League league phase.

How the goals came

The breakthrough arrived one minute before half-time. Bernardo Silva scored in the 44th minute to send Madrid in at the break 1-0 up.

Arda Güler doubled the lead in the 52nd minute, set up by Kylian Mbappé. Neither side found a goal for the next half an hour, though Álvaro Carreras (68') and Rocco Reitz (70') went into the book.

The game opened up late on. Mbappé made it 3-0 in the 83rd minute, with Yan Diomande providing the assist. Leipzig responded within two minutes, Tidiam Gomis scoring in the 85th minute from a Christoph Baumgartner pass.

Madrid had the last word. Diomande scored in the 87th minute, assisted by Brahim Díaz, to restore the three-goal cushion. Diomande, Díaz, Gomis and Baumgartner were all outside the starting line-ups.

What the numbers say

No team statistics were available for this match, so the season figures tell the story. Madrid are averaging 3.33 goals a game and 3 points a game, and have yet to keep a clean sheet, with 1.67 conceded per game. Gomis's goal means that run continues.

Leipzig's numbers are far weaker. They average 1 goal a game and concede 2.67, and have taken 1 point per game. Their only clean sheet of the campaign came in a 1-0 win over PSV. Before this match they had lost 4-1 at Como.

Madrid arrived on the back of a 2-1 win over Inter and a 4-3 win at Roma, so they have now scored at least twice in each of their last three matches. The head-to-head was already in their favour: two wins, a draw and a Leipzig win in the four previous meetings, the most recent a 1-1 draw in March 2024. This result makes it three wins from nine.

What it means in the table

Madrid are third in the league-phase table on 9 points from 3 games, with a goal difference of +5. Only PSG are ahead of them. PSG also have 9 points but a better goal difference of +9.

Leipzig are 28th with 3 points and a goal difference of -5. That leaves them in the lower half of the table, outside the top 24 and the knockout play-off places. Only Slovan Bratislava, bottom on 0 points and -12, are below them in the table facts we hold.

MFF's match model had predicted a 2-1 Madrid win, giving the hosts a 65% chance of victory. It was right about the winner but wrong on the scoreline, with Madrid's late burst taking the margin to three goals.
