Ipswich Town 1-1 Nottingham Forest: Enciso cancels out Williams opener at Portman Road

Ipswich Town and Nottingham Forest drew 1-1 at Portman Road on Friday night, with a goal in each half-hour of the first half settling a Premier League gameweek 8 meeting.

Forest struck first. Neco Williams scored in the 13th minute, with Daniel Muñoz credited with the assist. Ipswich took until the 41st minute to respond, when Julio Enciso equalised just before the break.

There were no more goals after that. The only other entries in the match events were two bookings in quick succession: Issa Diop for Ipswich in the 52nd minute and Murillo for Forest in the 54th.

What the numbers say

Full team statistics were not available for this match, but the expected goals figures point to Forest as the side that created more. Expected goals, the quality of chances created, was 0.5 for Forest and 0.06 for Ipswich, according to data via Fantasy Premier League.

That fits with how the goals came. Forest's chance count was modest, but Ipswich's was far smaller, and Enciso's finish was the one clear moment of the home side's night.

The result also went against MFF's match model, which had predicted a 2-1 Ipswich win and gave the hosts a 40% chance of victory. The draw was given a 24% chance.

Form and head-to-head

Ipswich came into the game after a 2-0 home defeat by Liverpool, their third loss in five league games. Forest had drawn 0-0 with Tottenham in their previous match, but had lost three of their last five before this one.

Forest had also won two and drawn one of the three most recent meetings between the clubs, including a 4-2 win at Portman Road in March 2025. Ipswich's wait for a win in that run goes on.

What it means in the table

The point leaves Ipswich ninth in the Premier League with 10 points from eight games and a goal difference of minus four. They have three wins so far.

Forest are 16th with six points from eight games, also on a goal difference of minus four. They have one win this season. Sunderland, in 20th, have four points from seven games, so the gap between Forest and the bottom of the table is still narrow.

Man City lead the way with seven wins from seven and 21 points.

Ipswich can reasonably say they dealt with a Forest side that went ahead early. Forest, who also took a point, will feel they had the better of the chances.
