Haaland goal in 78th minute settles five-goal game as Man City beat Leipzig

Man City beat Leipzig 3-2 at the Red Bull Arena on Wednesday night, with Erling Haaland scoring the decisive goal in the 78th minute of a game that had been level twice.

The result lifts City to seventh in the Champions League league-phase table. Leipzig stay near the bottom.

How the goals came

City went ahead in the 37th minute through an own goal from Leipzig's Castello Lukeba. The hosts equalised four minutes into the second half, when Ridle Baku scored in the 49th minute from a Brajan Gruda assist.

City regained the lead in the 58th minute. Enzo Fernández scored, with Iliman Ndiaye providing the assist. Leipzig were level again three minutes later, as Antonio Nusa finished from a Christopher Nkunku assist in the 61st minute.

Haaland settled it in the 78th minute, set up by Elliot Anderson. Four goals arrived between the 49th and 78th minutes.

What the numbers say

City had far more of the ball, with 64% possession to Leipzig's 36%. The shot count was close, though. Leipzig had 13 shots to City's 12, and 6 on target to City's 5.

City had six shots off target and one blocked. Leipzig had four off target and three blocked. Leipzig won the corner count 5-3, and City were caught offside five times to Leipzig's three.

The game was far more bad-tempered on one side. Leipzig committed 20 fouls to City's seven and collected four yellow cards: Christoph Baumgartner (17th minute), Baku (33rd), Neil El Aynaoui (48th) and David Raum (77th). City's two bookings, for Jérémy Doku (88th) and Abdukodir Khusanov (90+4), came late on.

What it means

City have nine points from four games, with three wins and a goal difference of plus five. They sit seventh, inside the top eight who go straight through to the last 16. PSG lead the table with 12 points from four wins.

Leipzig have three points from four games and a goal difference of minus six. They are 30th, outside the top 24 who reach the knockout play-offs. Only Slovan Bratislava, 36th with no points and a goal difference of minus 16, are in a worse position among the clubs listed in our table.

City have now won four of the last six meetings between the sides, with one draw and one Leipzig win. The previous meeting, in November 2023, also finished 3-2 to City.

MFF's match model had City as favourites, giving them a 42% chance of an away win, against 34% for a Leipzig win and 24% for a draw. It predicted a 1-2 away win. City did win, but the scoreline was wrong.
