Liverpool came from a goal down to beat Brentford 2-1 in gameweek 7 of the Premier League, ending the hosts' five-match unbeaten run.
Brentford had gone in front just before half-time, only to lose Yegor Yarmolyuk to a red card in the first-half stoppage time. Liverpool scored twice in the second half and held on.
The decisive moments
Keane Lewis-Potter put Brentford ahead in the 44th minute, with Igor Thiago providing the assist. It was the hosts' only goal of the afternoon.
Yarmolyuk was sent off in the 45+8 minute, and Brentford played the rest of the match with ten men.
Liverpool levelled in the 62nd minute. Víctor Muñoz scored, set up by Florian Wirtz. Eight minutes later Alexander Isak made it 2-1, with Bradley Barcola the creator.
Brentford's afternoon got worse late on. Vitaly Janelt had been booked in the 63rd minute and received a second yellow in the 90+2 minute, leaving the hosts with nine players. He was one of three Brentford players cautioned, along with Thiago (46') and Kevin Schade (60'). Liverpool had three bookings of their own: Barcola (31'), Jeremy Jacquet (49') and Alexis Mac Allister (53').
What the numbers say
Liverpool dominated the match statistically, and the gap is wide.
- Total shots: Liverpool 21, Brentford 10
- Shots on target: Liverpool 5, Brentford 2
- Shots off target: Liverpool 12, Brentford 4
- Blocked shots: 4 each
- Corners: Liverpool 9, Brentford 3
- Possession: Liverpool 60%, Brentford 40%
- Fouls: Liverpool 13, Brentford 7
- Offsides: Liverpool 2, Brentford 1
Brentford had a numerical disadvantage from the end of the first half, which goes some way to explaining the lopsided figures. Even so, Liverpool turned their territory into goals only after the break.
MFF's match model had predicted a 1-0 Brentford win, giving the hosts a 50% chance of victory. It was wrong on this occasion.
What it means in the table
Liverpool are fifth with 12 points from seven games, three wins and a goal difference of plus one. Brentford are sixth on 10 points from seven, with two wins and a goal difference of plus five.
Manchester City remain well clear at the top, with seven wins from seven and 21 points. Tottenham are bottom, on three points from six games.
The result also adds to Liverpool's record against Brentford. Of the last seven meetings, they have won five, with one draw and one Brentford win. That was the 3-2 home victory in October 2025. The most recent meeting before this one, on 24 May 2026, finished 1-1.
