The difference came in accuracy. Everton put seven shots on target and sent six off target. Coventry managed four on target and eight off target, the most wayward shooting in the game.

Coventry had been in reasonable recent form, with three wins and two defeats in their previous five league games. Everton had won two, drawn one and lost two in theirs. This time the home side were sharper in front of goal when it counted.
