Declan Rice once again underlined why his Arsenal teammates call him “The Horse” with a dominant showing in the 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. His season has been marked by constant high-intensity performances, repeatedly delivering across full matches as Arsenal continue to compete on multiple fronts.
The England midfielder struck Arsenal’s second goal on the night, bending a powerful effort into the bottom corner to put his side firmly in control of the tie. That moment gave Arsenal breathing room on aggregate and allowed Mikel Arteta to rotate his squad with the upcoming Carabao Cup final against Manchester City in mind.
Despite the opportunity to rest players, Rice remained on the pitch throughout as Arsenal completed a 3-1 aggregate victory. His importance is reflected in his workload, having started 37 of his 43 matches this season and ranking among the most-used outfield players at the club.
His goal against Leverkusen, adding to Eberechi Eze’s earlier strike, took his tally to five goals in all competitions, alongside 11 assists. His set-piece delivery, particularly from corners, has also become a major attacking weapon.
After the match, Rice admitted the demanding schedule is taking its toll but highlighted his ability to push through physically. He described the relentless run of fixtures since October and explained how he finds an extra burst of energy to keep contributing at both ends of the pitch.
Midfield partnership key to Arsenal’s balance
Rice’s influence is further strengthened by his partnership with Martin Zubimendi, forming a dependable midfield base. Their role has grown even more vital during periods when captain Martin Odegaard has struggled with injuries.
Both players were briefly rested in the FA Cup against Mansfield Town, but their availability will be crucial as decisive fixtures continue to arrive in quick succession. Together, they shield the defense while also contributing going forward, with Rice’s energy and versatility standing out once again against Leverkusen.
Arteta praised Rice’s contribution, describing him as central to the team’s identity. He emphasized the passion, work rate, and consistency shown not just by Rice, but by the entire squad in maintaining such a high level every few days.
Former Arsenal defender Matt Upson echoed those sentiments, highlighting Rice’s durability and consistency. He pointed out how rarely the midfielder is rested and described his physical output as exceptional.
Momentum builds as silverware in sight
Arsenal’s strong form continues across competitions. They hold a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League, have advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals, and are also through to the same stage in the FA Cup.
The club has not lifted a trophy for six years, but an opportunity awaits at Wembley against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final. Rice stressed the importance of maintaining momentum, noting the confidence within the squad as they continue to win matches.
He also spoke about the mindset required during such a demanding period, explaining that there is little time to reflect as games come one after another. According to Rice, continued victories help sustain energy levels and enjoyment within the team.
