Following Girona’s notable victory over Barcelona in the recent Catalan derby, Girona head coach Míchel took the opportunity to deliver a public message to his counterpart, Xavi. The match, which unfolded as a pivotal clash in the ongoing battle for the second spot in the La Liga table, saw Girona emerge triumphant with a 4-2 win over the Catalan giants.
Amid the aftermath of the match, Barcelona boss Xavi faced heavy criticism from fans and media alike. However, in an interview with El Larguero, as cited by Diario Sport, Míchel was quick to come to the defense of his fellow tactician. He acknowledged Barcelona’s recognizable style under Xavi, noting their ambition to press, play attacking football, and maintain possession: “it is a recognizable Barça, wanting to go after the rival, pressing, playing football, wanting to attack, and having possession…”
However, Míchel also issued a subtle warning to Xavi, suggesting that comparisons to the iconic Barcelona side managed by Pep Guardiola could pose a challenge. Hinting at the difficulty of replicating Guardiola’s legendary team, Míchel implied that such comparisons might set unrealistic expectations: “I don’t know if I told Xavi in the first leg. I told him that you will always lose if they remind you of Pep’s Barça. Because that team is unrepeatable. And he was also part of that team as a player.”
Míchel’s words underscored the monumental legacy of Guardiola’s Barcelona and the challenge of living up to their historic achievements. While acknowledging Xavi’s distinguished history with the club as a player, Míchel subtly cautioned against the pressure of trying to emulate past glories.
