Eddie Howe has voiced optimism that Alexander Isak will remain a Newcastle United player when the Premier League season begins. The Swedish striker was not involved in Saturday’s 4-0 pre-season defeat to Celtic, a match that saw the Magpies struggle in attack without him and fellow absentee Joelinton.
Despite ongoing reports linking Isak with a summer move, Howe maintained a measured stance. “I can’t guarantee anything about any player,” the Newcastle manager stated post-match. “But Alex is content here — he enjoys his surroundings and has been a positive presence in the group. I believe he’ll still be with us when the season starts.”
Celtic punish Newcastle in pre-season setback
Newcastle’s visit to Celtic Park ended in a comprehensive defeat as the Scottish champions capitalised on several defensive lapses. Arne Engels opened the scoring with a first-half penalty after Joe Willock conceded a foul inside the area. Moments before the interval, goalkeeper Nick Pope made a crucial misjudgment while attempting to intercept a long ball, allowing Johnny Kenny to double the lead.
Anthony Elanga, recently signed from Nottingham Forest for £55 million, came on after the break to make his first appearance, but had limited influence as Celtic continued their dominance. Yang Hyun-Jun added a third goal early in the second half, and Liam Scales completed the rout with a towering header fifteen minutes from time.
Howe confirms Isak set for Asia tour
Looking ahead to Newcastle’s next fixture, a pre-season clash against Arsenal in Singapore on 27 July, Howe confirmed that Isak is still very much part of his plans despite all the constant transfer rumours. “He’s included in our travelling squad. As things stand, I anticipate he’ll make the trip,” Howe confirmed.
The Magpies will be looking to regroup quickly after their poor showing in Glasgow, with Howe hoping to integrate new signings and regain form before the Premier League campaign kicks off.
