Gareth Southgate has hailed England’s recent achievements, noting the national team has provided fans with some of the most memorable moments in half a century, following their advancement to a consecutive European Championship final. A late, thrilling goal from substitute Ollie Watkins secured a 2-1 victory against the Netherlands, allowing England to come from behind and set up a final showdown with Spain.

Southgate, who led England to their first final in 55 years at Euro 2020, only to be narrowly defeated by Italy, expressed optimism about going one step further this time. “I took on this role to elevate English football, and now we’ve reached a second final. The previous one was the first in over 50 years, and now we’re in our first final overseas,” Southgate stated. He added, “We’re delivering unforgettable experiences to our fans, some of the best in the last 50 years. I’m incredibly proud of that.”

Overcoming challenges to reach the final

Despite the celebratory mood, England’s path to the final has been far from easy. They have become the first team in European Championship history to reach the final despite trailing in both the quarter-final and semi-final stages. Jude Bellingham’s spectacular bicycle kick in the 95th minute secured a dramatic win over Slovakia in the last 16, and a tense penalty shootout was required to defeat Switzerland.

The journey has not been without criticism. Fans expressed their discontent during a goalless draw against Slovenia in the group stages, even throwing plastic cups towards Southgate. Reflecting on the pressure, Southgate remarked, “Everyone seeks approval. When you’re representing your country and all you see is criticism, it’s tough.”

Southgate finds great satisfaction in reaching a second final, understanding the significance for the fans and the nation. “Celebrating a second final is incredibly special. Had I not been on the pitch, I would have been celebrating alongside the fans,” he said. Looking ahead, Southgate emphasized the upcoming challenge, “We came here with the goal to win the tournament, and that remains our focus. Facing the best team in the tournament in the final is the ultimate test, but we are still here and ready to fight.”
