Real Madrid are reportedly set to award Kylian Mbappé the No. 10 shirt ahead of the 2025–26 campaign. The number becomes available following the exit of Luka Modrić, who wore it for most of his decorated tenure at the club.
Since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, the French forward has worn the No. 9 jersey, which was previously held by Karim Benzema. In that debut season at the Santiago Bernabéu, Mbappé netted 44 times across all competitions, marking an impressive start in Spain.
ESPN reports that the plan was always for the 26-year-old to take over the number 10 jersey once it became vacant. Despite reports that Arda Güler was a potential candidate to inherit Modrić’s number, the decision to give it to the French international appears to have been made long in advance. Mbappé was even prepared to wait another year if Modrić had chosen to extend his contract.
A symbolic switch for Madrid and Mbappé
The No. 10 shirt holds great significance at Real Madrid, with past wearers including club legends such as Ferenc Puskás and Mesut Özil. Modrić, who wore the number for eight seasons, collected a club-record 28 trophies during his 13-year stay.
For Mbappé, the switch to this historic number aligns with the one he currently wears for France. He also previously donned it during his spell at Monaco. Taking over such a prominent jersey will raise the expectations on the forward even further.
Despite an outstanding goal tally last season and claiming both the Pichichi Trophy and European Golden Boot, Mbappé was unable to help the Spanish side secure silverware. The pressure will now increase, as he becomes the new face of Madrid’s iconic shirt.
