Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will join Marseille on loan for the 2024/25 season, with a clause to make the transfer permanent next year.
Hojbjerg, who was signed from Southampton by Jose Mourinho in 2020, quickly established himself as a mainstay in the Spurs lineup. Under Antonio Conte, he continued to feature regularly. However, the arrival of Ange Postecoglou saw his role diminish significantly. During the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, Hojbjerg only started eight matches, as the likes of Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, and Rodrigo Bentancur were favored.
A Tottenham spokesperson stated: “We have reached an agreement with Olympique de Marseille for the loan of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for the 2024/25 season, with an obligation that will make the move permanent. We wish Pierre all the best for the future.”
Over four seasons with Spurs, Hojbjerg made 184 appearances across all competitions and netted ten goals. Memorable among these was his last-minute strike against Marseille in the 2022/23 Champions League, which secured Tottenham’s progression to the knockout stages.
Hojbjerg recently represented Denmark at Euro 2024 and was absent from Tottenham’s pre-season victories over Hearts and Queens Park Rangers due to his national team duties.
As the new season approaches, Tottenham’s recent signings, 18-year-olds Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, are expected to have limited roles, with Bissouma, Sarr, and Bentancur likely to be key figures in midfield, alongside James Maddison playing in a more offensive position.
Hojbjerg’s move to Marseille marks another significant acquisition for Roberto De Zerbi, following the signing of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood. Meanwhile, former Marseille top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has moved to Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah.
