Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich defeated Werder Bremen on Friday, becoming the fastest player this century to reach 100 goals for a club in Europe’s top five leagues. The England captain first converted a penalty at halftime and then netted a close-range finish in the 65th minute, hitting the milestone in only 104 appearances.
The previous benchmark of 105 matches had been set by Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid in 2011 and later equaled by Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. Bayern secured the 4-1 win with goals from Luis Diaz, who redirected a Jonathan Tah corner, and a late strike from Konrad Laimer, maintaining their unbeaten start to the season.
This season, Kane has already scored 15 goals in eight games across all competitions, including two hat-tricks in five Bundesliga fixtures. His prolific scoring has helped Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga with a perfect record.
Milestone achievements and Bundesliga records
Kane’s performance adds to a series of historic records in Germany. He reached 70 Bundesliga goals in only 67 matches, the fastest ever in the league, and had previously set records for the most goals in 50 games (54) and the fewest matches needed to reach 50 goals (43).
In addition, Kane became the first player in Bundesliga history to convert his first 18 penalties successfully, scoring consecutively from the spot. He also holds the distinction of finishing as the league’s top scorer in both his first two seasons and is the only player to net 25 or more goals in each of his first campaigns.
His consistency extends to Europe, as Kane is the highest-scoring Englishman in Champions League history with 42 goals and has scored against all 20 Bundesliga opponents he has faced.
Impact at Bayern and recognition abroad
Kane transferred from Tottenham Hotspur to Bayern in 2023 for £100 million, after scoring 280 goals in 435 appearances for the Premier League club. With two years left on his four-year deal, Kane confirmed he has no plans to return to England, saying he is enjoying his time in Germany and focused on team success.
While Jude Bellingham has drawn praise for his move to Real Madrid, pundits argue Kane’s contribution to Bayern has been equally significant. Pat Nevin highlighted that Kane often carries the team and has made a major impact, despite not always receiving equivalent recognition.
German analyst Raphael Honigstein described Kane as “the best of all” Bayern strikers, including Robert Lewandowski, praising his selflessness, defensive work, and ability to influence games beyond scoring. Former striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink added that Kane appears sharp, consistently dangerous, and fully capable of carrying the team under pressure.
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany emphasized Kane’s work off the ball, including pressing, running, and positioning, noting that the striker’s energy and effort are crucial to generating scoring opportunities and team success.
