Ruben Amorim, Sporting Lisbon’s manager, has announced there will be a “clarification” regarding his anticipated transition to Manchester United after Sporting’s league match against Estrela on Friday. Although he is expected to lead Sporting through their games until the international break in mid-November, there remains ambiguity over whether a deal has officially been reached for him to assume the role at Old Trafford following Erik ten Hag’s departure.

“It’s a negotiation between two clubs, it’s never easy,” Amorim, 39, said. Reports from Portugal and United board member Sir Dave Brailsford’s remarks to fans, confirming the move as “done” during Wednesday’s EFL Cup game, have added to the speculation. Despite these claims, Sporting maintains that talks are ongoing, with no formal agreement finalized. Manchester United has so far declined to comment on the matter.

Amorim added, “Even with the clauses, it’s never easy. They have to talk, and we will have clarification after the game; it will be very clear.” He indicated a decision will likely be confirmed after Sporting’s match on Friday. The team faces Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday and rivals Braga on November 10, before the league pauses for international fixtures.

Speculation creates tension among Sporting players

Sporting, currently leading the Portuguese league with nine consecutive wins and a narrow lead over Benfica, saw additional pressure emerge this week as Amorim acknowledged that transfer discussions have unsettled his players. The team recently beat Nacional 3-1 in the Portuguese League Cup, but Amorim admitted that ongoing rumors about his future have affected the squad’s focus.

“My players weren’t their usual selves; they were clearly uneasy and anxious about the news. I know them well, and I’ve always stood by them, but there are things beyond my control,” he said. With Sporting obligated by financial regulations to disclose any agreement with United to the Lisbon Stock Exchange, confirmation of Amorim’s exit will be required once a deal is in place.

Van Nistelrooy speaks on interim role and United’s immediate future

Newly appointed interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, stepping in after Ten Hag’s departure, held his first press conference on Thursday, where he shared his immediate focus and outlook. The former United striker, who was informed he would be in charge for a brief period, expects to lead the squad in their upcoming Premier League clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

Van Nistelrooy reflected on conversations with Ten Hag following his exit, noting Ten Hag’s disappointment but also his pride in the legacy of his two cup wins. He also spoke with former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson before United’s 3-1 victory over Leicester, where Ferguson extended his encouragement and support for the interim manager.

Looking ahead, Van Nistelrooy has expressed his willingness to continue assisting United, potentially in various roles. “I’m here to help the club forward, and I remain very motivated to do so in any role,” he stated.
