A wave of severe flash floods in Spain has prompted the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to reschedule several football matches, including Real Madrid’s La Liga game against Valencia, which was initially slated for Saturday. The decision to delay games comes as authorities in the Valencia region report a death toll of at least 95, with many still unaccounted for following intense rainfall and widespread flooding.

In response to the disaster, Real Madrid, in partnership with the Red Cross, pledged $1 million (£845,000) in relief aid to assist those affected. This donation will be allocated to aid the numerous families facing this dire situation, who need our collective support and solidarity.

Additional fixtures affected across Spanish leagues

Besides Real Madrid’s match, Villarreal’s encounter with Rayo Vallecano in La Liga has also been postponed. In the Segunda Division, games including Castellon against RC Ferrol, CD Eldense facing SD Huesca, and Malaga’s trip to Levante have likewise been delayed.

In Liga F, Spain’s premier women’s division, Valencia’s game against Deportivo La Coruna and Real Madrid’s fixture with Levante are among the suspended events. The RFEF confirmed that these suspensions were issued following requests from La Liga, Liga F, and affected clubs, underscoring the challenging conditions and the need to prioritize safety.

Copa del Rey and tributes planned across Spanish football

Beyond La Liga and Liga F, several Copa del Rey matches, such as Valencia’s clash with Parla Escuela, had already been rescheduled. Additionally, the RFEF announced that a minute of silence will be observed at weekend games across Spain as a tribute to those impacted by the disaster, particularly honoring the lives lost in the flooding.

The RFEF’s decision reflects a show of solidarity from Spain’s football community as efforts to support and remember those affected continue amidst this tragic situation.
