Chelsea has officially named Enzo Maresca as their new head coach. The ex-Serie A and Italy midfielder will begin his duties on July 1, 2024, with a five-year contract that includes an option for the club to extend for an additional year. The announcement was made through the club’s official statement on Monday.

Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, expressed their enthusiasm over Maresca’s appointment. They highlighted his proven coaching credentials and his ability to achieve impressive results with a dynamic and identifiable playing style. They noted that Maresca’s aspirations and work ethic are well-aligned with Chelsea’s goals and values. Both directors are looking forward to a productive partnership with him.

Maresca’s recent accomplishment of leading Leicester City to a Premier League promotion stands out in his managerial career. At Chelsea, he will reunite with Cesare Casadei, an emerging Italian talent. Casadei, a former Inter midfielder, played 25 matches under Maresca at Leicester, contributing three goals and two assists before Chelsea recalled him in January 2024.

During his playing days, Maresca featured prominently in Serie A, racking up 167 appearances, scoring 21 goals, and providing 16 assists. His career included stints at several notable clubs: Bologna, Juventus, Piacenza, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, Palermo, and Hellas Verona.

Transitioning into coaching, Maresca served as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. He played a significant role in the team’s success, including their 2023 Champions League triumph over Inter Milan in Istanbul. With his appointment, Maresca becomes the seventh Italian to manage Chelsea, continuing a legacy of Italian influence at the club.

Maresca’s previous collaboration with Cesare Casadei at Leicester City adds an interesting dynamic to his new role at Chelsea. Casadei, who showcased his potential under Maresca’s guidance, is expected to further develop at Stamford Bridge. The Italian duo’s reunion is anticipated to bring fresh energy and a cohesive strategy to the team.

Looking ahead, Chelsea fans and stakeholders are eager to see how Maresca’s leadership will shape the club’s future. His blend of tactical acumen, experience in top-flight football, and a clear vision aligns well with Chelsea’s ambitions.
