Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has admitted that his team’s 2-1 loss to Monaco in the Champions League was deserved. Despite their promising form leading up to the game, an early red card to Eric Garcia left the Catalan side struggling to keep up with Monaco, who dominated much of the match.
Barcelona held just 44% possession and only managed four shots, while their opponents unleashed 18 attempts on goal, putting pressure on Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Flick conceded that his team had tried to fight back but ultimately couldn’t turn the game around.
Monaco capitalize on early red card
Flick reflected on the impact of Garcia’s sending-off, which happened in the opening minutes and set the tone for the rest of the contest. “We made some mistakes, but we defended with passion,” said Flick. “We had chances but Monaco deserved to win.” He acknowledged that the red card fundamentally altered the game, making it difficult for Barcelona to mount any significant response.
Monaco manager Adi Hutter also commented on the key moment, stating that the dismissal gave his side a clear advantage. However, he emphasized that Monaco’s performance was strong regardless, adding that his team “could have won by more” given their dominance throughout the game.
Flick looks ahead to recovery
Despite the disappointment, Flick remained upbeat about Barcelona’s prospects in the competition. He urged his team to regroup and focus on the future, with an upcoming league match just days away. “We lost, but we have to come back stronger,” Flick said. “We’ll analyze what went wrong and work to correct it.”
While he admitted that the result was a setback, Flick expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to bounce back and succeed in the Champions League. “There are seven games left, and we’ll win many of them to achieve our goals,” he concluded, stressing that the team’s resilience would be crucial moving forward.
