French forward, Olivier Giroud, aged 37, has announced his retirement from international football following the upcoming Euros tournament in Germany. Giroud, who has enjoyed a illustrious career with the French national team, highlighted the importance of making way for the younger generation.

In an interview with L’Équipe, Giroud expressed his sentiments about stepping away from international football after the Euros. “Obviously I’m going to miss it a lot, but I think my time with the French team will be over after the Euros. I need to cede my place for the young players,” he stated. This decision marks the end of an era for Giroud, who has been an integral part of the French squad since his debut.

Giroud’s retirement signifies a significant loss for the French national team. With 57 goals to his name, he holds the all-time record for Les Bleus. However, his impact on the team extended beyond goal-scoring. Particularly in the 2018 World Cup campaign, his presence was noted for the support and space he provided for his teammates, notably Kylian Mbappé.

During his tenure, Giroud earned praise from Mbappé himself, who expressed a desire for Paris Saint-Germain to acquire a striker akin to Giroud’s style. Mbappé emphasized the importance of having a forward who could complement his play and create opportunities, highlighting Giroud’s unique abilities on the pitch.

Approaching the Euros knowing it will be his last international competition, Giroud acknowledged the mix of emotions he anticipates. “There is a bit of nostalgia for all those years gone by. Obviously, there will be a lot of emotions, a lot of details, and memories that will resurface, but we have to put that aside and enjoy every moment once again […] emotion must not take over. There is still a competition to win, even if it will be special for me.”

As Giroud prepares to bid farewell to the international stage, he remains focused on the task at hand: pursuing success for the French national team. Despite the personal significance of his final tournament, Giroud remains committed to contributing to the team’s objectives and making the most of his remaining time representing Les Bleus.
