Atletico Madrid has officially secured the services of Conor Gallagher from Chelsea, signing the England midfielder on a five-year contract. The transfer, valued at approximately £34 million, was initially in jeopardy due to issues related to an adjacent deal involving Samu Omorodion. However, these complications have since been resolved, allowing Gallagher’s move to Metropolitano Stadium to proceed smoothly.
Gallagher, aged 24, had been training away from Chelsea’s first-team squad at Cobham as the transfer neared completion. His departure marks a significant change for the West London club, which has been actively restructuring its squad. Last season, Gallagher made 95 appearances for Chelsea, scoring ten goals, and frequently took on the captaincy role in the absence of Reece James.

Gallagher’s addition is part of Atlético Madrid’s extensive summer recruitment drive. The Spanish club has also brought in Robin Le Normand, Alexander Sorloth, and Julian Alvarez, aiming to bolster their squad for domestic and European challenges.
Chelsea’s squad management has seen a substantial increase in player numbers due to their aggressive strategy of acquiring young talent on long-term contracts. This move comes as Chelsea looks to manage their squad size more effectively following Gallagher’s departure.
In their recent Premier League opener against Manchester City, Chelsea’s midfield was led by Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, and Enzo Fernandez, but it was former Chelsea player Mateo Kovacic who stood out with a goal in City’s 2-0 victory. Chelsea has also been active in the transfer market, with recent additions including Omari Kellyman, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Renato Viega, and Caleb Wiley. Meanwhile, Joao Felix is nearing a permanent return, and Raheem Sterling’s future remains uncertain after his omission from the squad against Manchester City. Additionally, striker Armando Broja is expected to complete a loan move to Ipswich Town.
