Olympic Games London 2012: Men’s Football

Full qualification and match details from the 2012 London Olympic Games. Six venues were used for football matches: London (Wembley Stadium 90,000), Manchester (Old Trafford 76,212), Cardiff (Millennium Stadium 74,500), Newcastle (St James’ Park 52,387), Glasgow (Hampden Park 52,103) and Coventry (City of Coventry Stadium 32,609). Each nation had a squad of 18 players, 15 of which must have been born on or after 1 January 1989, and 3 of which could have been older dispensation players. A minimum of two goalkeepers (plus one optional dispensation goalkeeper) must be included in the squad.

Medalists

Mexico claimed the gold medal in a thrilling victory over Brazil, ending their long wait for Olympic football glory. Brazil had to settle for silver, despite being strong favorites, while South Korea secured the bronze medal in a victory against Japan, showcasing their impressive talent on the world stage.

Host Country and Venues

The United Kingdom was the proud host of the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament at the 2012 Summer Olympics. This marked the third time England hosted the Olympic football competition with the previous times being in 1908 and 1948. Six venues were used for football matches: London (Wembley Stadium 90,000), Manchester (Old Trafford 76,212), Cardiff (Millennium Stadium 74,500), Newcastle (St James’ Park 52,387), Glasgow (Hampden Park 52,103) and Coventry (City of Coventry Stadium 32,609).

Tournament Dates

The tournament  took place from 26th of July to 11th of August 2012. This two-week competition saw the world’s most promising young players clash for the coveted gold medal.
