Dean Huijsen has officially joined Real Madrid and could feature in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. The transfer was finalized before the arrival of new head coach Xabi Alonso, but several sources have reported that the former Bayer Leverkusen manager approved the move in advance.
Huijsen had a standout debut season in the Premier League with Bournemouth, drawing attention from several major English clubs. His performances prompted Real Madrid to act swiftly and secure the 20-year-old defender’s signature.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo in his first interview as a Madrid player, Huijsen shared a few details about his conversation with Alonso. The Spanish international explained that they had a short exchange about future plans and the club’s direction.
“We spoke a bit about the ideas and the goals,” Huijsen said. “We’re here to win, and I believe we will. He sees me as a defender who can help bring the ball forward.” While not revealing everything, the young center-back noted that some of the discussion would become clear through his performances on the field. “That’s personal; we’ll see on the pitch,” he added.
Huijsen admitted that his original intention was to spend more time at Bournemouth before considering a move to a top club. After just one season, though, the opportunity to join Real Madrid proved too significant to delay.
“I was planning to stay for two years, improve, and then think about the next step,” Huijsen revealed. “But everything has moved quicker than I imagined.”
The Dutch-born player, who represents Spain at the international level, is currently preparing with the national team for the UEFA Nations League semi-final against France. Following that, he is expected to travel with Real Madrid for the Club World Cup campaign.
