Mohamed Salah has ended speculation about his future by agreeing to a new two-year deal with Liverpool. Although he had earlier hinted at a possible departure, his wish to remain at Anfield has ultimately shaped the outcome.
Back in November, the Egyptian forward surprised fans by suggesting his time at the club might be nearing an end. Despite that statement, those close to Salah insist his true goal was always to continue his journey on Merseyside. These seemingly conflicting sentiments were both genuine, reflecting a complex situation that has now reached a positive conclusion.
A major breakthrough in discussions reportedly occurred late in March, when negotiations between Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, and Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, reached a turning point. From there, final details were swiftly ironed out. Teammate Andy Robertson only became aware of Salah’s renewed commitment earlier this week.
Salah, now 32, will stay at Liverpool until at least the age of 34. His contract extension marks what could be a full decade with the Reds, a rare achievement in modern football.
The new agreement includes a salary close to £400,000 each week, showing how highly the club values Salah’s presence. Players in their early thirties are rarely offered such terms, but Liverpool considered this an exceptional circumstance.
Salah has contributed to over 50 goals this season alone, making the idea of replacing him both logistically and financially overwhelming. Losing a player of his calibre would require not just identifying a similar talent, but also the immense funds necessary to bring such a player in.
One factor that may have eased the financial burden was the expected exit of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid this summer. With his departure, Liverpool were likely able to shift focus and allocate resources toward renewing key contracts – including Salah’s and Virgil van Dijk’s, who is also anticipated to re-sign.
The massive offer Salah reportedly received from Saudi Arabia, believed to be in the region of £500 million, did not sway his decision. While the financial benefits of such a move were undeniable – and the interest remained active until very recently – the forward prioritized competing at the top level.
Salah’s ambition to continue playing Champions League football, help Liverpool secure a 20th domestic title, and pursue personal accolades like the Ballon d’Or played a crucial role. He has previously finished fifth in the Ballon d’Or rankings twice and believes he still has more to offer.
Additionally, preparing for Egypt’s upcoming international campaigns, including the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations, influenced his commitment to remain in elite European football. Off the pitch, the comfort and happiness of his family in Liverpool also supported his decision to stay.
