Thiago Alcantara’s time on Barcelona’s coaching staff will come to an end this Friday, as confirmed by the club. The former Liverpool midfielder, who recently announced his retirement from football at 33, took on a short-term role under his former Bayern Munich boss, Hansi Flick, to assist him during the early stages of his tenure at Barcelona.

After leaving Liverpool when his contract expired, Thiago made a surprising decision to step away from playing and briefly joined Barcelona’s coaching setup to help Flick, with whom he shares a strong working relationship from their time together at Bayern Munich. While initial expectations suggested Thiago would remain in the position until September, his stint at the Catalan club has been cut short, concluding within a month.

Barcelona has already confirmed that current Cadet A manager, Arnau Blanco, will replace Thiago in the senior coaching team. Blanco, who has spent the last 11 years working in the Blaugrana academy, will assume the same responsibilities that Thiago held during his short time with the first team.

In a brief statement, Barcelona highlighted Blanco’s extensive experience within the club’s youth ranks, emphasizing their commitment to fostering talent and maintaining a high standard of professionalism among their coaching staff. Blanco’s promotion from the Under-16 team reflects the club’s faith in its internal development pipeline.

Thiago’s contribution to Barcelona was focused on aiding Flick’s transition into the club, ensuring the German coach had someone familiar with the club’s values and culture as he adapted to life in Catalonia. Despite the unexpectedly short duration of his involvement, Thiago’s presence is said to have been impactful.

Reports suggest that Thiago, after this brief venture into coaching, plans to take a step back from the football world for a while. However, there is speculation that the former midfielder may pursue his coaching qualifications in the future, having enjoyed his behind-the-scenes role at Camp Nou.

Meanwhile, Barcelona is preparing to begin their La Liga season this Saturday with a trip to Valencia. Hansi Flick will be looking to motivate his squad after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Monaco in the Joan Gamper Trophy, as they aim to start their domestic campaign on a positive note.
