England manager Gareth Southgate acknowledged the frustration of the fans who expressed their displeasure by throwing beer cups at him following a goalless draw with Slovenia on Tuesday. Despite topping Group C with five points from three games, England’s performances at Euro 2024 have been underwhelming, leading to dissatisfaction among supporters.
England fans express discontent
England secured their spot in the last 16, yet their journey has been marred by lackluster displays. The recent 0-0 draw in Cologne saw the team booed off the field both at half-time and full-time. Southgate, who approached the fans to show appreciation, became the target of their ire as beer cups were hurled in his direction. When questioned about the incident, Southgate expressed understanding and chose not to shy away from the criticism.
“I get it,” Southgate commented. “I’m not avoiding the issue. It’s crucial to maintain unity with the team. The criticism directed at me is better than at the players, though it creates a challenging atmosphere. I’ve not witnessed any other qualified team facing such reactions.”
Reflecting on the match and looking ahead
Despite the negativity, Southgate praised the fans’ support in the second half, highlighting its positive impact on the team. He commended the players for their composure under pressure and their ability to control the game after a difficult start. “The fans were brilliant in the second half. That support means a lot to the team. I’m incredibly proud of the players. They stayed calm, managed possession well, and dominated the second half,” he stated.
While acknowledging the desire to deliver a victory for the supporters, Southgate emphasized the importance of topping the group. “We would have loved to send the fans home happy, but this was definitely an improvement. Winning the group allows us to control our own fate.”
England is set to face one of the best-ranked third-place teams in the last 16, with the Netherlands being a probable opponent. The exact matchup will be determined at the conclusion of the group stage on Wednesday.
