Southampton have secured the signing of Arsenal and England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale for a total of £25 million. The deal consists of an initial payment of £18 million, with an additional £7 million dependent on performance-related add-ons.
Ramsdale, aged 26, has committed to a four-year contract with the Saints, which includes an option to extend by another year. The goalkeeper, who has earned five caps for England, was part of Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad. His move to Southampton follows 89 appearances for Arsenal, which he joined in 2021 from Sheffield United for £26 million.
Aaron Ramsdale has expressed his excitement about the transfer, highlighting the manager’s enthusiasm as a key factor in his decision. “I’m absolutely delighted,” Ramsdale stated. “The way the manager wants to play, and his enthusiasm when I spoke to him, made me feel incredibly positive about the move.”
Saints’ manager, Russell Martin, described Ramsdale’s arrival as a significant statement for the club. “I’m very grateful to ownership and the board for making it happen, especially as many other clubs showed interest in him,” Martin said. Ramsdale had been previously linked with a transfer to Wolves.
In a nod to his friendship with David Brooks, who played for Southampton on loan, Ramsdale attended the team’s play-off victory against Leeds United dressed as Hagrid from Harry Potter. Southampton’s announcement video humorously featured Ramsdale once again donning the Hagrid costume to reveal his new signing.
To fill the void left by Ramsdale, Arsenal are expected to finalize a season-long loan for Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto.
