Arsenal centre-back William Saliba has reached an agreement over a fresh deal that will secure his place at the club for the next five years.
The 24-year-old still had two seasons left on his existing contract, but he is expected to sign the extension in the coming days. The new arrangement will keep him in north London until 2030.
Saliba originally arrived from Saint-Etienne in the summer of 2019. He immediately returned on loan to the French outfit for the 2019-20 campaign and later had further temporary spells with Nice and Marseille before making his Arsenal bow.
Since his first appearance in August 2022, the France international has been central to Mikel Arteta’s defensive plans, already collecting 137 outings in Arsenal colours.
Growing importance at the back
The new agreement adds to the recent extension of Gabriel Magalhaes, who committed his future until 2029 earlier this summer. Together, the pair have created one of the strongest defensive partnerships in England’s top division.
Saliba brings calmness in possession and an ability to anticipate play, complementing Gabriel’s more physical approach. He has regained the ball more often than any of his colleagues in league matches since his debut.
Not only does he excel defensively, but he also contributes significantly to Arsenal’s build-up play. Over the last three seasons, he has completed more passes than any other squad member and trails only Martin Odegaard for advancing the ball up the pitch.
He also ranks just behind Gabriel for both clearances and aerial challenges won, demonstrating how well their qualities combine.
Absence felt and squad depth
During the closing stages of the 2022-23 campaign, Arsenal struggled in his absence when he was sidelined with a back issue. The team’s title push fell away as a result.
Since then, he has barely missed a league fixture, sitting out only four top-flight contests. His consistency has become a cornerstone of the side’s progress under Arteta.
Although summer additions Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie have increased competition in central defence, ensuring Saliba’s long-term stay represents a major step forward for the club’s ambitions.
