Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala will be sidelined for a significant time following a broken leg and dislocated ankle sustained during Saturday’s Club World Cup match against Paris Saint-Germain. The 22-year-old sustained the injury in the first half while contesting for the ball near the byeline, colliding with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Musiala’s pain was evident as he screamed and covered his face with his shirt before being stretchered off.
After being taken to the hospital for evaluation, Musiala has now returned to Munich for surgery. Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl expressed the club’s distress over the incident, emphasizing the player’s importance both on and off the field. Eberl noted how challenging this period is for Musiala, who had recently recovered from a previous injury, and assured full support from the club during his recovery.
Reactions from Bayern and Donnarumma
The injury visibly affected both teams. Donnarumma appeared to look away after witnessing the incident, while Bayern’s players were visibly upset as their teammate received medical attention. Bayern’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer criticized Donnarumma’s challenge, describing it as “risky” and expressing disappointment over Donnarumma’s initial lack of response towards Musiala on the pitch.
Neuer recounted approaching Donnarumma at halftime, encouraging him to show respect by checking on Musiala and offering an apology. Neuer stressed the importance of fairness in such situations and indicated that he would have reacted differently. In response, Donnarumma later posted on social media, sending his prayers and well wishes to Musiala.
Bayern’s commitment to Musiala’s recovery
Max Eberl highlighted the emotional and sporting impact of Musiala’s injury on the club. He acknowledged the central role Musiala plays in Bayern’s team and reiterated the club’s commitment to providing everything necessary to support his rehabilitation. The club looks forward to his eventual return to the pitch, standing firmly beside him throughout the recovery process.
