Los Angeles FC clinched a place in Chelsea’s group at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup after a hard-fought extra-time victory over Club America at BMO Stadium. The Major League Soccer side recovered from a goal down to win 2-1 and book their spot in the 32-team tournament hosted in the United States from 15 June to 13 July.
The decisive goal came just five minutes before the end of extra time when Gabon forward Denis Bouanga struck the winner. The match had been level at the end of regular time after Brazilian striker Igor Jesus headed home an equalizer in the 89th minute – his first goal for LAFC.
Club America had taken the lead in the 64th minute through a penalty by former LAFC attacker Brian Rodriguez, following a foul by Mark Delgado on Erick Sanchez. The one-off match was arranged after Club Leon was disqualified due to failing to meet tournament rules regarding multiple club ownership, a ruling confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Club America, being the next highest-ranked side from the region, stepped in for the playoff.
World Cup winner Olivier Giroud, who previously played for both Chelsea and Arsenal, played a crucial role after being brought on as a substitute in the 74th minute. The 38-year-old provided the assist for Bouanga’s match-winner as the tie appeared to be heading for penalties.
The victory means LAFC will join Chelsea, Flamengo, and Esperance Sportive de Tunis in Group D. Their first match is scheduled against Chelsea on 16 June in Atalanta. LAFC’s squad also features experienced French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, formerly of Tottenham.
