Manchester United are close to finalising a significant deal for Matheus Cunha, with the Wolves striker on the verge of sealing a £62.5 million move to Old Trafford. BBC Sport reports that while a formal bid has yet to be submitted to Wolves, this is anticipated in the near future.
Although discussions between the two clubs have not yet taken place, the presence of a release clause valued at £62.5m removes the need for extended negotiations. If United choose to activate the clause, they can bypass prolonged talks and proceed with the transfer, pending adherence to the stipulated terms.
Sources suggest that United would be obligated to complete the payment in full, spread over three instalments across two years. The first payment, amounting to £20.8 million, would be made upon confirmation of the transfer. A second instalment is scheduled for the end of the 2025-26 season, with the remaining balance due by the summer of 2027.
The clubs are close to agreeing on Cunha’s personal terms, and according to those familiar with the matter, finalising his contract is now seen as a mere formality.
Cunha, 25, has played 92 games for Wolves since joining the Premier League side from Atletico Madrid in January 2023, initially on loan. During his time at Molineux, he netted 33 goals, including a standout campaign this season.
He appeared to bid farewell to the club following Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Brentford, widely believed to be his final match in a Wolves shirt. Taking to social media, Cunha reflected on the year, calling it the best of his career and thanking supporters for their continued backing.
He also highlighted a personal achievement, matching Roberto Firmino and Gabriel Martinelli as the highest-scoring Brazilian players in a single Premier League season.
